Frequently Asked Questions
The Wagon is for anyone who wants to better understand their relationship with alcohol or other drugs, whether they’re thinking about change, actively reducing use, or looking to prevent relapse.
It’s designed for adults seeking structured, evidence-informed support in a non-judgemental format. It is not suitable for people in acute crisis or those needing clinical treatment.
The Program provides online psychoeducation and self-help learning content relating to behaviour change, relapse prevention, triggers, cravings, coping skills, and wellbeing.
The Program:
· is not a substitute for medical care, diagnosis, or treatment,
· is not a substitute for individual psychological therapy,
· does not establish a psychologist–client relationship by itself,
· does not provide personalised clinical advice,
· is not monitored in real time and is not a crisis service, and
· is not suitable as a sole support for people experiencing severe dependence, acute withdrawal risk, or urgent safety concerns.
The program is for adults who want to change their relationship with alcohol or other drugs – including cannabis, stimulants, prescription medications used in risky ways, or a mix of substances.
The focus is on your patterns of use, triggers, coping strategies and goals, rather than on any one specific drug.
Yes. The Wagon is open to anyone considering change, regardless of where you’re currently at.
Yes. The Wagon is designed as structured psychoeducation and skills training, not therapy or crisis care. Many people use it alongside support from their GP, psychologist, counsellor, or AOD service. No, The Wagon is a psychoeducation-based program. While it draws from evidence-based psychological strategies (like CBT and mindfulness), it is not a therapy service and is not eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan. It is designed to support insight and wellbeing through education and self-reflection, not as a substitute for individual psychological treatment.
Payment is processed securely online through the course platform. You can pay with a debit or credit card, and you’ll see all available payment options on the checkout page. Some people also choose to use their own instalment or “buy now, pay later” services (such as Afterpay/Zip) if that’s something they already have set up with their bank or provider.

The Wagon is self-paced. All content is ready to be worked through when you are ready.
• The Clinical Recommendation (6 Weeks): For those seeking long-term change, we recommend completing 1-2 modules per week. This allows time to practice the strategies (like Urge Surfing) in real-world situations.
• The Intensive Path (7-10 Days): For clients with urgent requirements (such as upcoming court dates), the program can be completed as a high-intensity intensive. This requires approximately 12 hours of dedicated engagement with the video content and reflective workbooks.
You’ll need:
• A phone, tablet, or computer with a web browser
• A reasonably stable internet connection to stream short videos
• An email address to log in and receive your access details
The videos are short (mostly 3–5 minutes) and you can pause, rewind, or re-watch them. If your internet is slower, you can still work through the material at your own pace.
No. You’ll have access to all program materials for a total of 24 months from the start of the program.
If you’d like additional support during or after this time, you’re welcome to book a one-on-one session with Jay at the standard consult fee.
Yes. A list of high-quality support organisations will be provided when you start the program. Most of these services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and include both telephone and online options. The Wagon is not a crisis service, so if you're in immediate distress, we encourage you to contact a dedicated mental health support line.
Yes. When you complete The Wagon you’ll receive a certificate of completion.
Where appropriate – for example, if you’re working with a lawyer or another service – and with your consent, a brief letter can also be provided confirming your participation (e.g. dates, modules completed and general topics covered).
This is documentation of psychoeducation only; it is not a forensic or pre-sentencing assessment and does not include risk opinions or treatment recommendations.
You’ll receive a certificate of completion, plus a short feedback survey.
You can continue to access the The Wagon for two years from the date of enrolment.
If you feel like you require additional one-one-one support, please refer to the Support Services (https://www.thewagon.com.au/support-services)page on The Wagon website.
